Demerol is a prescription-only narcotic drug mainly used as a pain reliever during childbirth and labor. It is also prescribed to reduce pain from cancer, heart attack, and fatal accidents. Demerol is the brand name for the drug meperidine. It works by changing the body’s awareness of pain by stimulating the central nervous system. Apart from the painkilling functionality, Demerol also gives the user a feeling of elation and joyfulness for a short period of time. This temporary ‘high’ can lead to dependence on the drug, which can quickly become an addiction if left unchecked or untreated. Some people start using it on a regular basis to forget about their worries and anxiety, even if it is for a short period of time. Once this habit is formed, the individual starts taking higher dosages of Demerol as time passes. This can lead to severe consequences as the body becomes physically and psychologically dependent, including serious withdrawal symptoms. Some of the most common symptoms of Demerol abuse are depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, alcoholism, PTSD and other forms of drug addiction.
